National Research Nuclear University MEPhI
The department №7 "Experimental Nuclear Physics" was founded in December 1945.
The first head of the department was Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences A.I. Alikhanyan. Together with him, the first professors began to work: Academician L.A. Artsimovich, Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences I.I. Gurevich and S.Ya. Nikitin. These are scientists who made a significant contribution to the creation of nuclear weapons in the country. In different years the professors of the department were academicians: V.I. Goldansky, A.M. Baldin, S.I. Nikolsky.
Today the Department of Experimental Nuclear Physics and Cosmophysics is one of the leading scientific and educational units in Russia, which trains students (bachelors and masters) in two modern scientific directions: Nuclear Physics and Cosmophysics and Physics of Fundamental Interactions. Leading Russian scientists, many of them are chiefs of large experimental installations and known in the world, are taking part in the educational process, enabling young generation (students or schoolchildren) to get acquainted and take part in advanced scientific research on unique experimental equipment.
Graduates of the department оhave deep knowledge in
experimental nuclear physics, fundamental and applied nuclear cosmophysics, physics of fundamental interactions,
in the development and application of new nuclear physics methods and experimental instruments.
Some graduates of the department are leading scientists and specialists,
working at large scientific organizations.
Today the department employs highly qualified teaching and scientific personnel, including doctors and candidates of sciences. For example, the pilot-cosmonaut, the hero of Russia S.V. Avdeev is one of the lecturers. Bachelors and masters, as well as postgraduate students, are trained at the department. Annually the department graduatess qualified specialists who later have the opportunity to work at the Russian Academy of Sciences and industrial organization (Roskosmos, Rosatom, etc.), as well as work at foreign scientific institutes and laboratories.
СThe older generation of the staff of the department has a huge experience, accumulated
in the constantly executed developments and experiments which are shared with the younger generation. Such cooperation
allows the department to remain on the top of modern science.
Many world scientific results in nuclear physics, physics of fundamental interactions and the
exploration of the cosmos were obtained with the participation of our employees and graduates.

Golub Olga, Б14-101 (4 year, 2018)
Work on the department began immediately after the choice of scientific direction. I was interested in cosmic rays and dark matter, so I was offered to participate in the work of the PAMELA collaboration. My first task was to identify the cosmic gamma radiation using PAMELA data; I presented the results at a scientific conference in the city of Yaroslavl. After entering the department 7, I've never regretted the choice I made. Here, a friendly atmosphere reigns, and if you have questions, you can always ask for help from the staff of the department. Teachers strongly contribute to the professional development of students.
